About Us

The Iroquois bestowed the name Oswego, meaning “pouring-out place,” and today the name still fits. Advantages flow in abundance here in a county of over 117,500, a county born on the move and on the water on the Oswego River and Lake Ontario which connects the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Atlantic.

A center for trade since its inception

Oswego County is now home to business and enterprise flourishing at a crossroads location allowing strategic access to the Eastern U.S. as well as Canadian and global markets through a logistics network that includes Class I rail and Port of Oswego, the first port of call on the St. Lawrence Seaway. With rich natural and human resources, the County has built a diversified economy powered by clusters in advanced manufacturing, transportation, agribusiness, energy and tourism.

Oswego County is a center for power, home to three clean energy nuclear generation stations; we are also a powerhouse educational center, home to State University of New York-Oswego (SUNY-Oswego), where an annual enrollment of 7,000+ adds strength to our labor force and enthusiasm and new ideas to our communities.

The natural beauty of Oswego County is immense. Here, pastoral agriculture is part of the landscape, and visitors come from across the U.S. to experience exhilarating four-seasons recreation—on lakes and rivers; in parks and forests, nature centers and a state park; on trails for ATVs and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding. The variety is as infinite as the beauty.

This naturally makes Oswego County an ideal home for residents of all ages, in particular families with young children who can go to excellent schools and grow up in friendly neighborhoods where homes are affordable and attractive. Oswego County home styles are varied, from historic neighborhoods to vibrant waterfront and downtown living. And while we are invitingly unique, in many ways Oswego County offers a classic American life, from an annual farmer’s market to year-round festivals to historic and cultural museums in a region where recorded history stretches back centuries.

A working lighthouse sits on Oswego County’s Harbor West Pierhead, aiding ship navigation. We have a history of welcoming and harboring people, from runaway slaves during the Civil War to European refugees during the Holocaust. We commemorate those refugees at Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum, and at eleven of Oswego County’s Underground Railroad sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And while visitors come from across the nation to take in the history here, they also come to soak up the sun and water fun in a four-seasons recreational paradise on Lake Ontario.

So with our historic past and an exciting future ahead, we welcome you to Oswego County, as a new business, new resident or visitor.

We believe you’ll find that for the best success in business and investment, the best life for your family or for the visit of a lifetime, it’s gotta be Oswego County!
