Need for speed? Check out NAPA Dirt Week and other races at the Oswego Speedway. Or maybe you’d like the thrill of ice climbing on the dramatic Salmon River Falls. Maybe you’d rather whittle down your handicap on perfectly groomed greens. Or maybe you’d rather just kick back on a beautiful waterfront and marina or enjoy shopping, dining and connecting in a vibrant downtown. And what about a sampling of our fine craft breweries and wineries? We have it all in Oswego County.
Here in a place with recorded history that stretches back 350 years, the stories are vivid and varied, in museums and historic sites, and in a rich diversity of architectural styles, from Victorian to Colonial to Art Deco and more. A majestic Norman Revival landmark, the Oswego Public Library is the nation’s oldest public library still in its original building. At the historic Fort Oswego, important battles were fought and world-changing peace treaties signed, and during the Holocaust, European refugees were housed on Fort grounds. Before the Civil War, runaway slaves were helped along their way in various places in the County on the Underground Railroad. And all that history is still all here, in the Fort Ontario Historic Site, in nearly a dozen Underground Railroad marked sites and in the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum.
